New Home Care Guide

1. Security - Have someone check on your home on a regular basis – Notify local HOA and Police department of your departure plans; i.e. who has access to your home, and/ or who is to be contacted in case of emergency. It is good to have a neighbor or family member check the house periodically while you are away. 2. Water Valve – Consider turning water off to home if you will be gone for an extended time. Water valves are located in the garage common wall behind a metal door or alternately at the main typically in the front flower bed. Closing Up Your Home for Vacation In the event that you are away from your home for an extended period of time, please note the following suggestions to prepare your home for this absence.

3. Hot Water Heater – Unplug the cord from the outlet. It is not necessary to drain your water heater tank. You can also close the gas valve leading to the hot water heater.

4. Thermostat – Conserve energy by l eaving your thermostat set at 65 degrees in cold weather. 80 degrees in warmer weather.

5. Toilets – Close lids so water does not evaporate. Consider turning water valves off to toilets if main water main is left on.

6. Dishwasher and Drains – Close door, but DO NOT LATCH OR LOCK IN POSITION . Close all drains to help eliminate any sewer gases from coming back up into the home because of lack of use. 7. Garbage Disposal – After the last of the water is run, pour ½ to ¾ cup of vegetable oil in disposal to keep the blades lubricated and prevent the small amount of moisture that is always present on the bottom from causing rust. This works for floor drains also.

8. Hoses – Remove all exterior hoses

9. WashingMachine - turn off water valves to washingmachine if the water main is left on.
