Cracks in Concrete and Foundation Walls It is very natural to see cracks occurring in concrete. Most concrete cracks are cosmetic in nature. Measures are taken during the construction process to help control cracking as concrete cures. Expansion joints are intentionally placed in some concrete surfaces to allow sections of concrete to expand and contract with changes in temperature, and control joints are intentionally placed in concrete to help control cracking.
